Qt used by LG Electronics for webOS 3.0 Smart TVs

Qt reduces development time to deliver high performance graphics

Helsinki – 28 April 2016 – The Qt Company has revealed that LG Electronics has used the Qt cross-platform application and user interface (UI) development framework in the creation of its webOS 3.0 Smart TV platform. Qt’s ability to handle high performance rich graphics underpins the user experience delivered by LG’s 2016 range of Smart TVs. The two companies have signed a multi-year technology agreement.

LG is a major player in home entertainment and mobile communications, among other areas, and is one of the world’s largest makers of TVs. The company’s webOS platform has been designed with the aim of making TV simple again. Users are freed from the complexities that sometimes accompany advanced technology and can focus on the content they want at the time they want it.

LG’s webOS platform is a Linux kernel based multitasking operating system for devices including smart TVs and smart watches. It now utilizes a number of web applications that run in the Qt WebEngine. This engine is based on Chromium and delivers the combination of high performance and high quality that enables the system to be extremely responsive and visually appealing. Using Qt also helps to simplify optimization of web app performance, saving significant development time.

Juhapekka Niemi, Executive Vice President – Sales & Business Development, The Qt Company, commented: “LG is a great name in consumer electronics and The Qt Company is pleased to be a part of its new line of Smart TVs. Confronted with a host of content and input sources, users want simplicity, responsiveness, and beauty – and webOS certainly delivers this, with the help of Qt.”
