The new simplified Qt commercial licensing: what's in it for you?

What does the new simplified developer licensing mean?

We are consolidating our commercial developer offering down to four main license editions. This blog post is a continuation of the announcement from 1st Feb.

The higher-level an edition, the more features it includes. The upper-level licenses include features and functionality in the 'inner / lower' layer:

Qt Commercial Developer Offering

For a more detailed overview of what exactly the different editions include, please have a look at the feature details page.

How does this impact me?

Existing licenses will be converted to one of the new versions at the end of their license terms. Also, many new capabilities will become immediately available via the Qt Maintenance tool (installed into your Qt\ directory). This requires no action on your part!

Here is what will change for the different current licenses in detail.

Current Subscription: Qt for Application Development

Your license will be automatically converted to Qt for Application Development Enterprise. You will also immediately get access to the following features

  • M2M protocols

  • Design Studio Professional

Current Subscription: Qt for Device Creation

Your license will be automatically converted to Qt for Device Creation Professional. You will also immediately get access to the following features

  • M2M protocols

  • Design Studio Professional

  • Qt for MCUs Essential

Current Subscription: Qt for Device Creation Enterprise

You will immediately get access to the following additional features

  • Qt for MCUs UItimate

  • Qt Safe Renderer

Current Subscription: Qt for MCUs

If you have a Qt for MCUs Essential license, it will be converted into Qt for Device Creation Professional at the end of your current term. We will manage this conversion and discuss it with you if required.

If you have a Qt for MCUs Ultimate license, it will be converted into Qt for Device Creation Enterprise at the end of your current term. We will manage this conversion and discuss it with you if required.

If you do not want to wait until the end of your current license term, you can contact our sales team to convert at an earlier date. After the conversion, you will be able to access all the Qt for Device Creation features in addition to the existing Qt for MCUs features.

Current subscription: Qt Automotive Suite

Qt Automotive Suite subscription licenses will be converted to Qt for Device Creation Enterprise licenses at the end of the current license term. If you need access sooner, please contact our sales.

Legacy Perpetual or Term licenses

There are many different licenses still supported. The best way to get all benefits is to convert to subscription licenses. You can do this by contacting Qt sales.

Educational or small business licenses

Education and small business licenses are not yet updated, old licenses are still available. An update to these licenses is planned later in 2022. Follow this blog!

Benefits of the new simplified licensing

In summary, here are the advantages of the new licensing system for you:

  • You are getting added features at no extra cost.

  • With any subscription license and Qt License Agreement 4.4, you will be able to distribute your application after the expiry of your subscription.

  • Qt Design Studio Professional will be included in all the developer licenses.

  • The Qt License Agreement 4.4 now also covers Quality Assurance Tools. Read more on this in the announcement from 1st Feb.

If you are interested in a module (see feature comparisons page) that is not included in your new subscription, you can contact our sales team to sign a new contract.

More details of the simplified portfolio are documented in the Frequently Asked Questions about the commercial licensing on the pricing pages. If you have questions or comments, please contact us or comment below!
