Qt Creator Release Cycle Overview

The Qt Creator IDE comes with a regular release cycle and as needed, maintenance patches in between releases.

3 Releases Per Year

There are 3 Qt Creator releases per year, typically in the spring, summer, and fall.

Maintenance Releases

In between releases, there may be patches for bug fixing and high priority issues.
Multiple Qt Creator releases are not, however, maintained in parallel, and typically there are no more patches after the beta of the next release is available.

The Qt Creator release or maintenance schedule is not aligned with the Qt Framework release cycle. However, there is typically a patch available for Qt Creator at the time of each
Qt Framework Minor release.

The Latest Release

Qt Creator 20 highlights agentic support with full Qt context:

  • Agent Client Protocol (ACP) to connect any major AI coding agent to the IDE,
  • Preset configurations for common agents, e.g. Claude Code and GitHub Copilot,
  • Access for the connected agents to understand your codebase and perform actions on your behalf,
    • e.g. analyzing code, editing files, running commands, or triggering builds,
  • Model Context Protocol (MCP) server for rich Qt-specific context,
  • Information on Qt Creator's state as context,
  • Ability to register additional MCP servers.

In addition, there are various other improvements, including the Zen Mode for putting the code editor into the focus and support for the Generate Ninja (GN) build system.
