Maintenance Periods and Security Updates
The availability of Qt’s Maintenance releases and security patches varies between Commercial Qt licenses and the Qt Community Edition. This is especially important to be aware of when it comes to ensuring security and regulatory compliance.
Maintenance as Suits Your Needs
When deciding on your Qt licensing, note that there are major differences to the maintenance periods.
Commercial Qt LTS Releases
When development stability and reliability are your priority, Qt Long-Term Releases (LTS) provide you with years of support and maintenance.

STABILITY OVER THE YEARS
Maintenance Periods for Qt LTS Releases
The commercial Qt Long-Term Support (LTS) releases provide long-term stability for your product in production. As the LTS releases overlap, your team can prepare for the update to the next LTS in an organized manner.
Maintenance for at least 5 Years
Qt LTS releases provide years of support and maintenance:
- From Qt 6.8 onwards, 5 years
- Until Qt 6.5, 3 years
Qt LTS customers get the Maintenance releases and security patches immediately at their release throughout the release’s maintenance period. These can be further extended with additional services.

DEVELOPMENT CONTINUITY
Maintenance Periods for other Minor Releases
The normal Minor releases between the LTS releases are often used by the Commercial Qt customers for product development and testing purposes, to build upon the new and improved features before switching over to the next LTS.
Maintenance for 12 Months
Minor release users get all the Maintenance releases and security patches immediately for a 12-month maintenance period per Minor release. When backporting the relevant ones to your product’s next version in development as they become available, at the time of updating your product to the next LTS release, you have everything ready-to-go and tested.

FREQUENT UPDATES
Maintenance Periods for Qt Community Edition
Using the Qt Community Edition, the open source version of Qt, requires more frequent manual work to stay up-to-date, especially with the security patches.
Delayed Patches after Initial Support
Qt Community Edition releases get Maintenance releases until the next Minor release, which is approximately every 6 months. After this, updates are provided as delayed patches, which become available 12 months after their commercial release.
Users of Qt Community Edition have two options. Option 1 is to update to every new Minor release every ~6 months. Option 2 is to manually apply and integrate the security patches from latest available Maintenance releases.

When choosing between Commercial Qt and the Qt Community edition, be mindful of the tightening cybersecurity regulations, such as the EU Cyber Resilience Act (CRA). The obligations they bring on vulnerability management, lifecycle security updates, and supply chain transparency, are significantly easier to comply to with the longer maintenance periods and ready-made building blocks offered by Commercial Qt.
Additional Support & Maintenance
If you need support, maintenance, or security patching beyond the standard maintenance periods, there are possibilities for extension.
