Thesis Student, Embedded Software Development, IAR Systems
Uppsala, Sweden
About Us
Our software and development tools help build products used in cars, hospitals, factories, homes, and industries around the world. We help engineers solve complex challenges and create technology people can depend on.
Rooted in Nordic values and trusted by innovators worldwide, we combine deep technical expertise with a culture of curiosity, craftsmanship, and collaboration. With decades of engineering experience and a shared passion for technical excellence, we're helping shape the future of software and embedded development.
We take pride in building tools for people who build the world around us.
About the Role
IAR is part of Qt Group, operating as an independent business focused on embedded software development. We provide software development tools that help engineers develop, debug, test, and secure embedded software for products across automotive, industrial automation, medical technology, and other industries.
We are looking for students interested in completing a bachelor’s or master's thesis together with our Engineering organization in Uppsala. Your thesis will focus on a technical challenge connected to our products, tools, or development environment, combining academic investigation with practical engineering.
At IAR, you will work closely with experienced software engineers and get the opportunity to apply what you have learned at university in a professional development environment. You will gain insight into the challenges our engineers work with every day and explore a topic that has both academic relevance and practical value for IAR. A thesis can also be the beginning of a longer relationship, with opportunities to stay connected to IAR as you continue your studies and develop your career.
We are particularly interested in students who already have an idea or technical area they would like to investigate. Tell us what you are curious about and why. Together, we can explore how your idea could be developed into a relevant thesis project at IAR. Both bachelor’s and master's thesis projects are paid.
The thesis work will be carried out together with our Engineering organization at our headquarters in Uppsala, Sweden.
What You’ll Do
Depending on the topic and academic level, your work may involve research, evaluation, implementation, testing, or a combination of:
- Explore and define a technical problem together with your IAR supervisor and development team
- Research existing approaches, technologies, or methods relevant to the problem
- Design, implement, or prototype potential solutions
- Test, measure, and evaluate your results in a real engineering environment
- Work closely with software engineers and gain hands-on insight into our products, technology, and development processes
- Document your findings, draw conclusions, and present the outcome of your thesis
What You Bring to the Table
We are looking for students who are genuinely curious about software development and enjoy exploring technical problems beyond their coursework. We would like to understand what you have built, investigated, or experimented with so far – whether through personal projects, university projects, open-source contributions, previous work, or other technical activities.
- You are currently pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Embedded Systems, Electrical Engineering, or a related field
- You have hands-on programming experience and can share examples of technical projects or problems you have worked on
- You have an interest in embedded systems, software development, testing, debugging, automation, or developer tools
- You have an idea, technical problem, or area that you would be interested in exploring as part of your thesis
- You enjoy investigating technical problems and turning ideas into practical solutions
- You are comfortable taking ownership of your work while asking questions and collaborating with others
- You can communicate your work and findings clearly in English
Bonus Points For...
- Experience with C, C++, Python, or similar programming languages
- Previous exposure to embedded systems, software testing, test automation, debugging, CI/CD, or development tools
